It has been a very busy few weeks with lots of shoots and lots of travels. I travelled to this region as it was one of the last regions of the country that I had not had the opportunity to get to during my coverage of environmental issues in China over the past couple of years. This area is crucial to China as it is the &#8216;bread basket&#8217; of the nation, producing vast amounts of food which are fuelling the people of China to make some of the amazing economic changes we have seen over the past few decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3437\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3437\" style=\"width: 464px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3437\" href=\"https:\/\/seangallagher.wpengine.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/31\/zhalong-wetlands-chinas-wetlands-crisis\/zhalong-wetlands-6\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3437 lazyload\" title=\"Zhalong Wetlands - Heilongjiang - China\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seangallagher.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/zhalong-wetlands-6.jpg\" alt=\"Zhalong Wetlands - Heilongjiang - China\" width=\"464\" height=\"464\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 464px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 464\/464;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3437 \" title=\"Zhalong Wetlands - Heilongjiang - China\" src=\"https:\/\/seangallagher.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/zhalong-wetlands-6.jpg\" alt=\"Zhalong Wetlands - Heilongjiang - China\" width=\"464\" height=\"464\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Red Crowned Crae - Zhalong Wetlands - Heilongjiang - China<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This &#8216;fuelling&#8217; is coming at a cost however, as huge areas of wetlands are being convereted into farmland, resulting in the obliteration of the majority of the region&#8217;s wetlands. Experts that I have spoken to estimate that between 50-70% of the regions wetlands have completely dissapeared, just in the past 50 years.
