Beijing Floods – Typhoon Doksuri

BEIJING FLOODS

TYPHOON DOKSURI

'Biblical flooding in Beijing after heaviest rain in 140 years...more than 800,000 people were forced to relocate in and around Beijing after nearly 30 inches of rain triggered some of the worst flooding in the city’s history." - Accuweather

In late July/early August of 2023, Typhoon Doksuri brought havoc to large swathes of China, as consecutive days of heavy rains brought widespread floods to the Chinese capital.

According to the Associated Press, in was the city’s “heaviest rainfall in at least 140 years, causing severe flooding and 21 deaths.”

As a resident of Beijing, I was able to access some of the worst affected areas by cycling through damaged roads and flooded streets, eventually reaching the worst affected communities. These images were all taken by drone, as I felt this was the best tool to show the extent of the damage in this area.

According to Reuters, “dramatic swings between extreme heat and intense rainfall are testing China’s ability to cope with increasingly wild weather, as high temperatures challenge power grids and water security while floods ruin crops and threaten urban populations….Officials have warned repeatedly that China is especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to its large population and unevenly distributed water supplies.”
